June 2nd – Nuclear Abolition Day 2012 – A Letter to David Cameron from CND Cymru

Dear David Cameron,
Nuclear weapons are immoral and only serve to make the world a more dangerous place. They must be outlawed as a matter of urgency.
Nuclear weapons have the destructive capacity to pose a threat to the survival of humanity and all living things. As long as they continue to exist and be legitimised by our governments the threat will remain. The ill-perceived political value and prestige attached to these weapons are further factors that encourage nuclear proliferation and non-compliance with international obligations.
It is of great concern to us that, even after the end of the Cold War, the threat of nuclear annihilation remains part of the 21st century’s international ‘security’ environment.
Recently the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross said:
“Nuclear weapons are unique in their destructive power, in the unspeakable human suffering they cause … and in the threat they pose to the environment, to future generations, and indeed to the survival of humanity.”
We call on the British Government to act now, to take the Trident nuclear weapons system out of service, to cancel any plans to ‘replace’ Trident, and to begin negotiations at the earliest possible date on a treaty banning the use, production and stockpiling of nuclear weapons, and providing for their total elimination in a verifiable and time-bound manner.
